Good value but with little flaws, 1 Jan 2012

I bought this after having a 26". At the same time I upgraded to a HD service with a certain TV provider so I received a DOUBLE BOOST. Perhaps this made it very impressive, but it seems a lot of tele for the money. One issue is that the stand does not seem big enough for the TV and it appears a bit wobbly; perhaps this is my perception but other reviewers (elsewhere) have made the same comments, so it might be someting to think about if you have unruly kids running about. Of course this would not be a problem if you had it wall mounted.

If you want a decent LCD tv, this one delivers that and nothing more. I bought this tv hoping that it would solve all my troubles after owning a CRT all my life. However the stand requires nothing short of a degree in engineering to fathom out or stupidly long arms and taking everything out of the box. There is a very disapointing array of connections: 2 HDMI and 1 SCART only... If you have kids like I do, you'll be very hard pressed to connect a game console, DVD player and SKY/VIRGIN Box... Sometimes if not impossible...

The redeeming features struggle to mask this problem, whilst the huge number of options for games, cinema and even soap operas allows you watch and hear in perfect clarity and at oh what a price... for under £400 you get a major brand name, with well built quality product that looks stylish in all surroundings and allows you to sit looking smuggly whilst people wonder how you can afford such a tv.

Overall, shows potential but must try harder...

I want to agree with the review before mine and add more comments about the networking. I don't use Windows on my computer but Linux. I added Windows networking (samba) to my Linux box and the player found it as expected. The play back of media was excellent for most video formats I tried. Playing MP3s was superb! The up-scaling to 5.1 sound was beautiful!
(Note: Do go into the players settings and change the sound settings to Pass-Thru)

What surprised me though was that it also found my MythTV (television recording) software also and allowed me to play its recorded TV shows. It could show my programs by Title, Genre, Date, Channel and Group. Play back was excellent and convenient using the remote. An extremely pleasant and helpful unexpected feature!!

The Youtube feature was fun and usable. The other things were of little use to me.

Having been overcome by the irresistible siren-song of new shiny things I finally wore down the resistance of my more sensible other half and took the plunge to upgrade from our perfectly good three year old 37" Samsung LCD telly and ancient, though excellent, Toshiba DVD player. After much exhaustive research, the TV I fell for was a 42" LG LCD (the 42LK540U) and, as coincidence would have it, the Blu-ray player that finally seduced me was the LG BD660.

All of the other Blu-ray players seemed to have something against them, including poor DVD upscaling, noisy operation and price. This unit suffers none of these ills. Given that we have hundreds of DVDs, the quality of upscaling to full 1080p was an important consideration and we were not disappointed; obviously the quality of the upscaling depends on the quality of the DVD; for example Source Code is a bit grainy while Lord of the Rings is near Blu-ray quality, but all of the DVD's we've watched so far have been as good as or better than watching on the old DVD player. The player whirs and clunks quietly to itself when a disk is first inserted, but after that there is no drive noise at all. Blu-ray playback is phenomenal. We were a little sceptical about whether we would be able to see the difference between DVD and Blu-ray with our aging eyes, but the difference is incredible; it's like seeing the first DVD after being used to VHS. The only Blu-ray we have so far is the Avatar Collector's edition and it is noticeably more crisp (edges you could shave with!) and the colour depth and sound quality are superb; our aging but brilliant separate AV amp presented us with near cinema DTS quality via the optical connection (although as our amp only has one optical input (used by the satellite decoder) we needed an optical-to-coaxial converter).

We haven't got it connected to the broadband router but I downloaded the latest firmware onto a USB stick and upgraded the player with no problem. If you want a quality player to watch DVD and Blu-ray disk then look no further; I can't comment on all of the gimmicky networky & file compatibility stuff - I don't need it so don't care.

Bedroom or Kitchen Perfection, 24 Jun 2011

Using this to replace an aging 14" CRT tv in the bedroom. Arrived a day ahead of the estimated date so huge thanks to Amazon. As with all LCD's, spend time adjusting the picture options to suit your room and to get the type of picture 'you want'. Only had it a day or so, but so far, very happy.

Pros:

New 2011 model, at time of purchase, Amazon was £20-£35 cheaper than other retailers.
Easy Set-Up.
Sleek Looks, nice coloring in the frame (still a dust magnet like most lcd's)
Excellent image quality. (freeview tested only, will be updating to sky multiroom soon, so will update on HD image)
Very good program guide (if your familiar with the Sky Guide, it even shows a mini screen when searching)
Nice clear sound, some good options/variations in this section (like most lcd tv's, they always sound very different if changing over form a CRT tv.)

Cons:

Stand needs a bit of work, doesn't quite feel like "its home" when screwed in, but this should not stop you buying.
Only 1 HDMI but this can easily be solved with an HDMI switch box form a company such as NEET.

Summary:

If your after a good brand lcd tv with lots of picture options, clear and easy no fuss set-up, clean looks and simple tv guide, this would suit you perfectly for the kitchen or bedroom. There is also a 22" version if you need a slightly larger screen.

UPDATE: Just a quick mention, the firmware on this tv may need upgrading if you set turns itself off on random occasions. Simply visit the samsung uk website, search for the model of tv, click on the firmware tab and download it onto a usb drive. Once the file is unpacked on the drive, connect it to the back of the telly and upgrade the firmware via the menu system.

Absolutely brilliant TV for my room. I've always loved Samsung TVs for their rich and vibrant colours which is exactly what I got. The tv has very easy to use settings to change things such as colour, contrast, sound etc and I literally had 100s of Freeview channels installed on the tv in minutes as soon as I plugged it in.

I also ordered an extra HDMI lead to connect the TV to my laptop so I can watch things like BBC iPlayer, 4oD, films already on the laptop etc.

Overall an excellent TV with a surprisingly small price tag ;)

I've had this unit a few days now. My main motivations for the purchase were:

1. I needed a 32 inch TV for a bedroom.
2. The TV brand must be recognised for quality and reliability.
3. I wanted to be able to stream movies from my home network to the TV.
4. The TV didn't need to be 1080p compliant, for the following reasons:
a. The set I intended to purchase wasn't going to be larger than 32".
b. I would be further than 3 meters (approx 9 feet) from the tv when viewing, so 1080p would be pointless.

So, satisfying number 1 was a no-brainer (the TV's 32") and, as for 2, Samsung is recognised for building quality sets that tend to be reliable (which is why many other brands use Samsung panels in their units). Furthermore, with work I tend to live in hotels a lot. Many that I've stayed in tend to have Samsung sets in their rooms, which is perhaps evidence of quality and reliability at an affordable price (something lacking robustness would soon break in a hotel environment). Even if that's a false impression on my part, I've become familiar with the interface and have found the sets (of varying models) to be user-friendly and more than satisfactory in terms of picture quality.

Regarding the streaming of movies, this brings me to an interesting point (and back to the issue of brands): after much research I was initially considering a few models by various manufacturers (LG, Toshiba, and Samsung) but a review of another Samsung model (the LE32c450) surprised me by stating that most Samsung's will play movie files directly from a USB device plugged into the TV. For me, this was an added bonus, as I wouldn't necessarily have to go to the trouble of streaming movies from my home network -- I could simply plug a drive/usb stick into the TV and watch movies that way. So, I decided to buy the le32c450 from another retailer...but they'd sold out. The LE32D450 (the tv which this review is about)was a little more pricey than the bargain price I'd spotted but, on Amazon was still a bargain, so I took the plunge.

Upon attaching the TV to the stand, I noticed what others have commented-upon: that the stand can appear flimsy and a little difficult to attach properly. Some brute strength (I don't have a cordless screwdriver) sorted this problem and, although the stand 'appears' flimsy, I don't think it is...if you have the strength (or a cordless screwdriver) to attach it properly. That said, the stand is only temporary, as I will soon be fixing the TV to a wall bracket.

When I powered the TV on (via the standard, but nothing special remote) several easy-to-follow prompts helped me set-up the TV (including automatically scanning for freeview channels). Once this was done, I viewed several of the channels and found the picture and sound to be more than satifactory (I am no expert reviewer of TVs, but I've watched enough in my time to know what, to me, qualifies as a good picture...and bad speakers annoy me -- yet no red flags were raised in that department). I've now been using the TV for a few days and have watched a variety of programmes and movies (of various file types) and neither the sound nor picture has been of concern; in fact, I've been delighted with both. Who doesn't love a bargain?

Now, onto the USB 'magic'.Up until recently, I didn't know that many Samsung TVs could play movie files directly from a USB device. In fact, if they marketed this feature more aggressively, I'm certain many people wouldn't have the need to buy media-streamers. This was the feature I was most keen to explore, so, over the past few days I've been watching films and documentaries (in order to test the tv) via a hard drive I have connected via the USB port of the TV. I've found that the TV will play the following formats: avi, mp4, mkv, TS. I've read that it plays others, but haven't had the chance (or need) to verify that yet. Regardless, it's pretty astounding, and the on-screen menu for navigating through my files (on the USB device) is nicer than the one that comes (for example) with my dedicated media streamer (a WDTV Live). I couldn't be happier. For those wishing to plug their camera into the TV to look at pictures, this feature should also allow you to view the video you've taken with the camera. You'll find that you can't do this with many TVs (as they normally only support the playback of pictures -- and in some cases music -- via the USB port).

Finally, an oddity (and I've read that this applies to most, if not all Samsung TVs): there's no 'power off' button. The TV can be put on 'standby', but you can't completely power off unless you unplug the unit from the wall. For most people this won't be a problem, and it certainly doesn't bother me. It does however, bother my significant other (who likes to completely switch off most electrical devies before going to bed). So, luckily, I found a use for a free 'Lime Energy Saving Plug'... I traded in my 37 inch Panasonic lcd for this. I shouldn't have bothered. The way it was pitched to me in the shop & having read the reviews on Amazon, I thought I can't go wrong. I cannot fault the picture for 3d, fantastic after buying a blu ray/3d player, but that's as good as it gets! Watching tv through my sky hd box or freeview was a huge letdown! The picture is dull, not at all vibrant as said. Even after going through the picture set up and advanced set up, reading the manual, trawling through the internet for possible solutions, it remained bland, dark and lifeless. I can only scratch my head now, or wait for an engineer (or replacement) to explain what's going on. I know this may be expected from plasma screens, but the reflection is another negative. Extremely irritating after being used to a non reflective lcd screen! The sound...forget it. If you haven't got an amp, don't bother..it's useless. Sorry to sound negative, but after buying this in the hope it would be the 'bees knees', I've been left very frustrated!

I just bought this TV and im really glad i did,amazing picture quality very easy to set up and lots of options,and the 3D effects are amazing,maybe a gimmick to some,but only time will tell if it really takes off.
At the time i bought mine the amazon price is abit high(December 2010),i got a far better deal from Johnlewis for nearly the same price i got the Tv with 5 years extended warranty and 3DBluray player with 2 years warranty and 2 sets of glasses and 4 3D Bluray films,Avatar3D,IceAge,Coraline,Paul Carrack..i think anyone buying a Panasonic 3d Tv at the moment can get the films by going to the panasonic website and downloading the order form, the offer ends 31th of january 2011.
Is the TV worth the money,it is to me as im a major geek and 3d gaming and 3d movies are something i really enjoy,to others maybe wait for the price to drop or see if the 3D blu rays take off.
